13th March 2012: Objection to planning application 12/00380/F

Working with our community partners such as the Greater Bedminster Community Partnership, Bristol Council, Tree Bristol and currently the local UWE Art School. I together with many other Bower Ashton residents have been involved for several years in improving the Bower Ashton roundabout and the surrounding areas with tree planting, bulb planting and currently sculptures being made (due in Spring 2012). The sculptures aim to mark the Bower Ashton roundabout and its surrounding green areas as a gateway to Bower Ashton and the Ashton Court Estate. This comments facility doesn't allow attachments but I can supply details of the artists design and timetable if required.

You can see some of the previous community involvement in this area in plans, photos and comments on the following pages of the Bower Ashton website -

I strongly feel that large intrusive structures like the proposed mast should not encroach upon this space and negate the work put in by residents to make this area fit in with Bower Ashton's conservation status and to generally improve the area.

The footpaths close to the mast are the sole pedestrian access to a large school with 1,100+ pupils and I do express concern over the mast in a location so heavily and frequently used by school children.

Residents & UWE students also use the bus stop beside the location of the proposed mast, country services from this bus stop gives access to Hotwells, Bristol City Centre and the Bus Station and the U1 service access to Asda (Bedminster), Temple Meads and the Frenchay campus. As this bus stop is shared by the UWE U1 service and all (non express) country buses using the A370 & A369 it is heavily used and I also think a mast is undesirable so close to location with residents, students and children waiting for buses.

I must note too that there is distinctly misleading & recycled information on the agents supplementary information, while I like recycling in general. Old information presented as new information does indicate inaccuracy and a laziness of approach by the agent or perhaps Vodaphone -

  • The post code - BS3 2JN is Rownham Close (where I live), if the mast is here rather than Clanage Road please tell me!
  • The consultation with Ashton Park School was with the previous head and previous chair of the board of governors, the last head left in August 2011, not sure of the date the last chair of the board of governor's (Roger xxxxx) departed though but a new location surely means a new consultation!?

16th February 2011: Sainsbury's (at Ashton Gate)

Planning Application 10/04777/P

I am very much against any supermarket coming to the site at Ashton Gate.

My main objection is because of the effect that it will inevitable have on the shops on North St. There is a very good greengrocer, delicatessen, butcher, 2 good sources for bread & a wonderful iron monger. There is also a hairdresser & cafes, where people do socialise. It is a thriving community & I for one don't want to see empty shops. Two banks and a post office. With all that the Tobacco Factory offers it has everything that makes it into a small street that has everything.

Secondly anything that could increase the volume of traffic in this area should not be allowed. It is dangerous as it is.

11th February 2011: Sainsbury’s (at Ashton Gate)

Better the devil you know

I don't think this would lead to the demise of the Southville Deli, Mark's Bread or the veg shop. The only casualty will be the newsagent next to Al's

Winterstoke Rd is always going to be very busy, the impact of Sainsbury will be minimal

But the proposed big new office block on the Wills site will increase rush hour traffic

If Sainsbury is rejected we could end up with something worse

16th February 2011: Tree Planting

... I do appreciate all the effort the committee have put into everything and I appreciate the tree planting. Thank you.

29th January 2011: Tree Planting

Please could you pass on our thanks to all those who worked in advance of last weekend's tree planting event. I know some people have been working towards the event for many months, and without their commitment the event would not have been possible.

The day itself was a great success, and another fine opportunity to meet our neighbours. Every time I see the new trees I'll be reminded of a fabulous day, and of what can be achieved when our community works together.

Note: You can see more on the tree planting event here. Peter
